In a recent interview, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella drew a striking parallel between the current AI revolution and the transformative impact of the internet in 1995. Nadella compared Bill Gates’ 1995 memo “The Internet Tidal Wave” to his own belief that AI is as significant as the Internet.

“The Bill memo in 1995, it does feel like that to me,” Nadella said. “I think it’s as big.”

The 1995 memo outlined Gates’ vision for Microsoft’s role in the Internet revolution. He predicted that the internet would be a major driver of growth for the company and that it would change the way people and businesses interact.

Nadella believes that AI has the potential to be even more transformative than the internet. He said that AI has the power to democratise access to technology and solve some of the world’s biggest problems.

“We in the tech industry are classic experts at overhyping everything,” Nadella said. “But what motivates me is I want to use this technology to truly do what I think at least all of us are in tech for, which is democratising access to it.”

To manifest its vision of democratising AI, Microsoft has entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI. OpenAI is a non-profit research company that is dedicated to developing safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence.

The partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI has been successful in developing new AI technologies and has also been praised by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He said that the partnership is an example of how large tech companies can work together to achieve common goals.

As the AI landscape evolves, it is important to be mindful of the potential challenges and risks. Jaan Tallinn, a founding engineer of Skype, has recently warned that the development of advanced AI technologies could lead to a world where it is no longer safe to be outside because of swarms of killer robots.
