Newbridge Fire:  McDonald's restaurant "will remain closed until further notice"

McDonald's said that all workers and customers were safely evacuated from a major fire at its Newbridge restaurant this afternoon. 

The fast food chain added that the premises "will remain closed until further notice".

A McDonald’s spokesperson said:

“Our Newbridge restaurant in County Kildare closed on Tuesday afternoon after a serious fire started at the site.

"The Fire & Emergency Services are still in attendance at the scene and working to contain the fire.

"Our crew and customers were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries.

"The restaurant will remain closed until further notice.”

Kildare Co Council said the fire is now under control but firefighters will remain at the scene. 

A Council statement said: "At 11:34 Kildare Fire Service was alerted to a fire at McDonalds restaurant on Moorefield Road in Newbridge.

"Newbridge fire station and two additional stations were mobilised to the fire. There are currently a number of fire appliances in attendance at the scene and the fire service hydraulic platform is also in use.

"While there is extensive damage to the property, there are no reports of injuries to any persons at the incident.

"The fire is now under control however the fire service activities at the scene are likely to be ongoing for the next few hours.

"Smoke is visible across a wide area, and residents close  to fire are advised to keep windows and doors closed.

"There is some traffic disruption in the area and this will continue while the fire service is at the scene.

"Kildare fire service appreciates the cooperation of the public during this incident."

Deputy Patricia Ryan for Sinn Fein  expressed her sadness at the fire which has taken place in McDonald’s Newbridge today.

She added: "I am happy to hear no one has been injured in the blaze and my office is happy to help with anyone
who needs assistance after this fire.
"This issue highlights the how important our retained firefighters are to our communities and how
they must get fair pay for the work they do.
"I call on Minister Darragh O’Brien to pay these hard working firefighters what they deserve as we
seen from today in there hard work extinguishing this fire and keeping people safe."
