SANDY — A motorcyclist died after he collided with a pickup truck making a left-hand turn off State Street on Thursday afternoon, police say.

Police responded to a report of a crash on State Street at Pioneer Avenue (8530 South) shortly after 1 p.m., according to Sandy Police Sgt. Greg Moffitt. He said a motorcyclist was traveling north on State Street when he collided with a pickup truck attempting to turn from southbound State Street onto eastbound Pioneer Avenue.

The motorcyclist, a male whose name and age were not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Moffitt said the driver of the pickup truck wasn't injured. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with police.

The crash remains under investigation; however, at least one witness told police that the motorcyclist was speeding prior to the crash, he said. That is one angle that will be looked at as a part of the ongoing investigation.

State Street was closed in both directions between 8375 South to 8750 South for several hours as a part of the investigation. It reopened Thursday evening.
