Although it's expected to sell out within minutes some shoppers are guaranteed to walk away with a multi-hundred-pound model for less than the price of a phone case, the M.E.N reports. And handsets on the list include some big-name brands, with Google and Samsung mentioned as well as last year's iPhone 14 range from Apple, including the flagship Pro Max model.

This handset alone would set you back £1,199 if bought new. The price of new tech has shot up in recent years with the average price of new phones costing around £700 but bigger brands including the newest iPhone 15 range from Apple or Samsung's latest Z Fold 5 device start at least £800 to £900.

So there's no doubt a lot of shoppers are turning to second-hand models. The huge offer has been introduced by the second-hand bidding site to highlight the rise of what it calls 'e-waste' problem as it's estimated more than 5.3 billion handsets are thrown away each year, as many users swap out their phones for the newest upgrade.

When it comes to the performance of the refurbished models all of the phones included in the deal have been restored and vetted by eBay, which includes quality checks. The 99p handsets will all come with a one-year warranty too.

Those who miss out on today's sale and bag a phone for less than £1 will still be able to take advantage of the 20% discount on Apple and Android models, as long as you follow this link from 10am. Head of refurbished technology at eBay, Mark Monte-Colombo, spoke of the benefit of using a refurbished phone.

He said: "Refurbished phones can admittedly be a great way to get a top-end gadget at a massive discount. These will typically be old phones that have been renovated with new touchscreens, cases, camera lens or speakers to replace broken or defective elements. If you're happy to put up with the odd scratch on the back of your device, you could save a fortune by buying refurbished."
