Scams targeting utility customers are on the rise, Atmos Energy warned in a recent news release.

Cybercriminals have started using search engine optimization techniques to place a fake website into a search engine’s top results. Users who click on the fake websites are directed to what appears to be a legitimate Atmos Energy page. However, the page features a fake customer service number and additional false information.

If customers call the fake customer service number, scammers may ask for login credentials or other sensitive information to access victims’ bank, credit card or other accounts.

Atmos also reported an increase in scammers calling customers and offering a discount on their energy bill if they pay immediately over the phone.

Imposters may also approach customers’ doors and demand payments in person, Atmos spokesman Kurtis Paradisa warned in the release. But Atmos employees don’t collect payments in person.

If this occurs, Paradisa recommends asking for an employee’s ID badge, which includes a name, photograph and the Atmos logo.

Atmos is reminding customers of the following information:

  • The company will never ask for payment using prepaid debit cards, gift cards, cryptocurrency or unauthorized third-party payment or mobile applications.
  • If someone ever has concerns about the legitimacy of a call, hang up and call customer service at (888) 286-6700.
  • Bill payments should be made through the online Account Center or other authorized payment methods.
  • Before service interruptions, Atmos will provide multiple notices and work to assist customers with payment plans and assistance options.
  • Atmos will not call before 7 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Central Time — unless there is an emergency.

“The most effective way to combat this recent increase in scam attempts is through education, awareness and extreme caution anytime someone contacts you about a utility bill payment,” Paradisa said.

Atmos urges customers who suspect fraud or feel threatened by a scammer to contact local law enforcement, as well as customer service at (888) 286-6700, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central time Monday through Friday.
