MCD to install 10k cameras in schools to ensure kids’ safety

MCD to install 10k cameras in schools to ensure kids’ safety
New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is going to install 10,786 CCTV cameras at 786 school complexes to ensure the safety of students.
The education department stated on Monday that the installation process would start soon. “The cameras will help in ensuring the safety and security of students. The project will be a milestone, which will help in continuous monitoring of vulnerable points in schools,” said an official.

IP-enabled 10 vandal dome cameras and five bullet cameras will be installed at each complex. “A hard disk will be placed to store the recordings and a 50MBPS internet connection will be installed, which will help in accessing the CCTVs from anywhere,” said the department.
The cameras will have motion sensors and start recording on detecting any movement. Those installed at vulnerable points will have night-vision features. The agency installing cameras will provide four years’ maintenance and a one-year warranty.
Though the proposal was welcomed by BJP, it has questioned the sources of funding. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said that while the project needed a budget of Rs 25 crore, the budget for the financial year 2023-24 didn’t mention any such allocation. “The chances of beginning of the project in near future looks dim,” he said. Hundreds of MCD schools already have CCTVs and it is necessary to check that they aren’t billed again, he added.

AAP councillor Ankush Narang said BJP was worried about how MCD schools were also improving like Delhi government’s schools. “We are committed to make MCD schools world-class. Our government has stopped corruption and looked for sources of revenue generation. Cameras will be installed and schools will be made safe and clean,” he said.

To enhance road safety, MNS installs reflectors on trees in Nashik
The Nashik Road unit of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has taken a proactive step towards road safety by placing banners and symbolic 'reflectors' on trees along the Pune Road stretch between Dwarka and Nashik Road. This initiative aims to caution motorists about the presence of trees without reflector boards, especially during nighttime, to prevent accidents. Despite previous efforts by the Nashik Municipal Corporation to install reflector boards, many have become ineffective over the years due to breakage or dust accumulation. MNS activists criticize the municipal administration for its perceived inaction, emphasizing the importance of maintaining road safety measures.
CCTV cameras, part of CSML project, unfit for the purpose
The Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) installed high-tech cameras for their surveillance system project in Kochi, but the cameras lack clarity and night vision. This hinders their ability to assist law enforcement in catching criminals. The integrated command, control, and communication center (IC4) was set up to collect data from various departments, but most features are non-operational. The cameras were installed as per the specifications, but the police have now deployed personnel to monitor the system.
BEST installs air purifiers atop 15 buses at Anik depot
The BEST undertaking has installed detachable air purifiers atop 15 buses to mitigate dust pollution. By February, 350 buses will have rooftop air filters. The purifiers have been procured by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. These can clean 15,000 cubic meters of air per hour and capture 12-15gm of particulate matter. The device operates on velocity and doesn't require a power source. A BEST bus runs 160km per day, so installing these devices on 100 buses will clean 10 lakh cubic meters of air daily.
