Accelera by Cummins will provide a 5-MW electrolyser system to Chevron New Energies, a subsidiary of US oil and gas giant Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX).

The zero-emissions technology brand of Cummins Inc (NYSE:CMI) said at the end of March it will supply two proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers for a Chevron project in California. The electrolyser system will produce hydrogen on-site from solar power and non-potable produced water from Chevron’s assets at the Lost Hills Oil Field in Kern County. Its daily output of over 2 tonnes will be enough to fuel 80 freight trucks up to 600 miles, Accelera estimates.

The project builds on a strategic agreement between Cummins and Chevron to foster alternative fuels adoption in North America. Chevron already announced recently it is developing the 5-MW hydrogen production project in California to expand the portfolio of lower carbon fuels it could supply to the region.
