Boeing's 737 Max delivery totals so far falling short of year-end goal

The Boeing Co. reported Tuesday its commercial aircraft deliveries increased year-over-year for deliveries through the third quarter of the year, though its 737 Max rates are lagging behind a 2023 forecast.

Boeing (NYSE: BA) delivers across commercial and defense operations, with all commercial fuselages including work in Wichita at Spirit AeroSystems (NYSE: SPR).

Third-quarter deliveries for commercial airplanes went from 112 to 105, marking a 6% year-over-decrease. But year-to-date deliveries were up, coming in at 328 in 2022 and 371 in 2023 — a 12% increase.

Boeing 737 Max year-to-date deliveries increased from 277 to 286 through the third quarter, but still behind a pace to reach its year-end goal. Boeing's CFO Brian West in September said the company would be on the low end of its scheduled 400 to 450 Max deliveries by the end of 2023 because of the inspection process and the need to fix thousands of misdrilled holes on the 737 Max 8 aft pressure bulkhead, according to Reuters.

The 787 Dreamliner saw a greater gain, from 9 deliveries in 2022 to 50 in 2023. The 747, 767 and 777 all saw a single-digit decrease in deliveries during year-to-date October numbers.

In July, Boeing increased production for the 737 and 787 to 38 737s and four 787s per month.

At the end of the year last year, the company delivered 480 commercial airplanes, which was up from 340 in 2021.

Boeing defense plane deliveries show decrease year over year

The numbers of Boeing aircraft delivered for defense was lower than last year. There were 115 year-to-date deliveries last year, 108 in 2023.

The year-end total deliveries for 2022 were 156, this was 13 less than 2021. Deliveries increased for the AH-64 Apache (remanufactured) and the F/A-18 Models, delivering 36 AH-Apache - remanufactured planes at the end of the third quarter in 2022 and two more in 2023, increasing this number to 38. The F/A-18 increased deliveries from the same time last year from 11 to 16.

The other defense deliveries were within three or four of what they were at this time last year. Total end-of-year deliveries for defense in 2021 were 169 and 156 for 2022.

The company is scheduled to release detailed revenue numbers at the end of October.
