The flagship campaign was launched to check that legacy waste doesn't build up at landfill sites.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti said that solid waste management was a challenge. "Various efforts are being made to deal with it. 11000 tonnes of garbage is generated daily in Delhi, out of which only about 8,000 of garbage is disposed of. In this way, 4000 tonnes of waste is converted into legacy waste in the landfill site, which is definitely a matter of concern. To solve this problem, it is necessary that more and more zero waste colonies be made and the garbage should be disposed of separately at the source itself," he explained.

There are three mountains of garbage in Delhi where bio-mining and recycling are done continuously to meet the objective.

On World Environment Day, Mayor Shelly Oberoi honoured the colonies which dispose of garbage at the source itself.

The mayor said that work is being done by the MCD to make Delhi garbage free. Meetings with RWAs in all 12 zones will be held to encourage them to become zero waste colonies.

These group housing societies have been awarded for 100% disposal of waste at source. Along with this, Bulk Waste Generators and Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (RRR) Centers were also honoured. In total, 127 Zero Waste Colonies, 10 NGOs, and 17 Bulk Waste Generators were awarded for their excellent performance in solid waste management.
