"On the lines of Delhi government, a winter action plan is being implemented for the first time by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) this year.
Our teams are going to every corner of Delhi and checking whether open burning is taking place. This is the time of festivals, so we are requesting people everywhere to not burn crackers and throw garbage only at designated places," she said.
During the inspection, Oberoi directed officials to spray water with dust suppressant powder on a large scale in heavily polluted areas of west Delhi. "To suppress other causes of pollution such as open waste burning, strict action is being taken as per the construction and demolition (C&D) waste rules. There should be a strict ban on construction activities going in all zones," said the mayor, who also sprinkled water on trees at Punjabi Bagh. On Tuesday, she visited RK Puram, another hotspot.
Between November 1 and 7, MCD has issued 297 challans for open burning of waste and imposed a penalty of Rs 14.8 lakh. Over violation of the C&D rules, 622 challans have been issued and penalties amounting to Rs 1.4 crore have been imposed. MCD has also demolished or removed 676 tandoors for illegal operation or use of banned coal.
The mayor said 250 people had been deployed in the monitoring team during the day and 316 people for the night patrolling of big and small roads in the city. She requested people to throw garbage only at designated places so that MCD could segregate and transport it to the landfills. "Garbage that doesn't go to the landfill will be taken to the waste-to-energy plants. By recycling it, we will be able to make other products," Oberoi added.
