According to Saunders, there is an increasing pressure on manufacturers and retailers to push trendy artificial trees or else consumers have no incentive to replace them. 'The manufacturers are very keen to introduce fashion into the Christmas tree market,' he told DailyMail.com.

'Every Christmas we see something totally different and every year there is a trend tree,' he said, citing old trends like upside-down trees and skinny trees with less foliage. 'This has been a year of pink,' he added.

And artificial trees are simply more suitable to being adapted to ongoing trends.
