How do these access keys work?

Access keys are configured based on facial recognition, fingerprint or device PIN and work on Windows, Android, iOS, macOS and all other Apple platforms. Once activated, it will be used to log in to any service, including Xbox.

When you enter a password to log into an account, you are essentially sharing a secret with the website or application to prove that you should have access to the account. The problem is that anyone who obtains this secret can gain access to your account and, if your password is compromised and appears on the dark web, the repercussions can be serious.

Passkeys are part of an initiative by Google, Apple and Microsoft to replace traditional passwords. Passkeys increase security through pairs of cryptographic keys. One is stored on the device, protected by biometric data or the PIN, while the second remains in the application or on the website where you are going to log in.

How to activate access keys in your Microsoft account

To create an access key for your Microsoft account, follow these steps on the device for which you want to create an access key:

1- Sign in to the Advanced Security Options of your Microsoft account.
2- Select Add a new way to sign in or check out.
3- Select Face, fingerprint, PIN or security key.
4- Follow the instructions on your device.
5- Enter a name for the access key.

Using your access key to sign in

To sign in to your Microsoft account with an access key, follow these steps whenever you receive a sign-in request.

1- Select Sign-in options or Other ways to sign in.
2- Select Face, Fingerprint, PIN or security key.
3- Select the access key from the available list.

Your device will open a security window where you can use your face, fingerprint, PIN or security key.
