SSE Renewables, part of UK utility SSE Plc (LON:SSE), has selected US energy storage company Fluence Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FLNC) as the technology provider for a 150-MW/300-MWh battery project in England.

Fluence, a company set up by AES and Siemens, will act as battery supplier for the project, while OCU Energy will serve as principal contractor, SSE Renewables said on Thursday.

The proposed battery energy storage facility will be installed at Fiddler’s Ferry, in the town of Warrington, at the site of a former SSE-owned coal-fired power station that was decommissioned in 2020. Construction works are planned to commence in the next few weeks.

The new battery will have a two-hour discharge capacity. Once in operation, it will store electricity that will be fed back to the UK National Grid during peak demand periods. The facility will use existing grid connections at the site.

SSE Renewables took a final investment decision on the Fiddler’s Ferry scheme last December.
