OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, is reportedly in discussions to secure substantial funding for a groundbreaking AI chip venture. The primary objective is to utilize the raised capital to establish a global network of fabrication facilities in collaboration with undisclosed top-tier chip manufacturers, according to a recent report by Bloomberg.

One of the significant challenges in the AI landscape is the scarcity of chips capable of handling the computational demands of advanced AI models like ChatGPT or DALL-E. Nvidia, with its H100 GPUs, has established virtual dominance, contributing to the company's valuation surpassing $1 trillion last year. Models such as GPT-4, Gemini, and Llama 2 heavily rely on Nvidia's popular GPUs.

The competition to produce high-powered chips for intricate AI systems has intensified. The limited number of fabrication facilities capable of manufacturing cutting-edge chips necessitates securing capacity well in advance, leading Altman and others to bid for future production capabilities. Competing against industry giants like Apple demands substantial investments, a challenge that the nonprofit OpenAI, despite being backed by Microsoft, currently faces. Talks with potential investors, including SoftBank Group and G42, are reportedly ongoing to gather the necessary funds for Altman's ambitious project.

Various companies engaged in AI model development have ventured into chip manufacturing. Microsoft, an investor in OpenAI, recently announced the creation of its first custom AI chip for model training, following Amazon's unveiling of a new version of its Trainium chip. Google's chip design team uses its DeepMind AI on Google Cloud servers to craft AI processors like Tensor Processing Units (TPU).

Major cloud service providers, including AWS, Azure, and Google, rely on Nvidia's H100 processors. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed plans to own over 340,000 of Nvidia's H100 GPUs by the year's end, emphasizing Meta's commitment to artificial general intelligence (AGI) development.

While Nvidia continues to dominate the field with the announcement of its next-generation GH200 Grace Hopper chips, competitors such as AMD, Qualcomm, and Intel have also launched processors tailored for AI model execution on various devices, including laptops and phones.
