Microsoft says its probing VPN issues with latest Windows 11 update: All details
Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows 11 security update rolled out earlier this month is causing problems with VPN connections and said it is investigating user reports. The KB5036893 security update was issued on April 9th for all supported Windows 11 versions.
“Windows devices might face VPN connection failures after installing the April 2024 security update (KB5036893) or the April 2024 non-security preview update,” the company said.
“We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.”

Platforms hit by VPN issues

According to Microsoft, the problem has affected home PC users as well as enterprise devices. On the consumers’ side, those PCs running Windows 11, version 23H2; Windows 11, version 22H2, Windows 11, version 21H2, Windows 10, version 22H2, Windows 10, version 21H2 are affected.
“We are investigating user reports, and we will provide more information in the coming days,” the company said, suggesting that a hotfix may be on the way.

Issue with Windows 11 and what users should do

Some users have reported that VPN connections with TPM-backed certificates aren’t working after they installed the security patch. Microsoft is yet to provide the root cause behind the issue and has advised home users to use the Windows Get Help app if they need support with their personal accounts. Business customers can reach out via the dedicated "Support for Business" portal.
Meanwhile, the temporary workaround is to uninstall the update. However, it is to be noted that since all security fixes are rolled out in a single update, removing the update will end up removing the latest protections from their PCs, making them vulnerable.
