Chaos erupted on a United Airlines flight after an unruly passenger reportedly attempted to enter the cockpit of the aircraft, which was then forced to make an emergency landing.

United Airlines Flight 1641, which had been en route to Los Angeles from Chicago, took off from the Chicago O'Hare International Airport at approximately 9pm local time but was quickly forced to land after a passenger got up and rushed the cockpit.

They attempted to open the flight deck and exit doors of the Boeing 737 but were ultimately unsuccessful, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement sent to The Mirror US.

When the flight landed, law enforcement officers were at the gate, waiting to apprehend the agitated individual, who was taken into custody. It remains unclear what the charges against the person are nor what happened to the delayed flight — though FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, indicates that the plane is set to make another trip from Chicago to Los Angeles on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 9pm local time on Friday, September 8. No additional information was readily available beyond what the FAA provided.

The Mirror US contacted United Airlines and the Chicago Police Department, but neither immediately responded to inquiries about the incident.
