Two rob woman of gold, cash; nabbed by neighbours
Coimbatore: Two youths barged into an elderly woman’s house at Siddhapudur here and snatched gold ornaments and cash from her on Wednesday night. However, neighbours nabbed the two and handed them over to police.
The arrested youths were identified as P Sathish, 21, and R Vigneswaran, 27, both from Kottar near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district. Police said Vigneswaran was working in a gas suppliers office at Peelamedu.
His friend Sathish had come to the city two days ago and was staying with him.
Around 8.30pm on Wednesday, the duo wearing monkey caps entered the residence of Komalam, an elderly woman, tied her hands and gagged her with a cloth. They stole 13 sovereigns of gold ornaments and 12,000 in cash from the house.
Komalam’s sister-in-law Anitha who came to give her food, noticed the house locked from the inside.
She saw some strangers in the house when she looked through a window and raised an alarm.
The two threw chili powder on Anitha’s face and escaped. However, neighbours chased the duo and caught them. They beat the two up before handing them over to the Kattoor police who registered a case and arrested the two. They were remanded in judicial custody on Thursday evening.

The Coimbatore city police recovered 3.2 kg of stolen gold ornaments from Jos Alukkas Jewellery store. Vijayakumar, a suspect in multiple theft cases, stole 4.6 kg of gold ornaments. The police traced his identity and found 3.2 kg of gold at his residence in Coimbatore and his relative's residence in Dharmapuri. However, Vijayakumar's whereabouts remain unknown.
72 sovereigns of gold jewellery stolen from house near Madurai
Burglars broke into the house of a paint shop owner in Thuvariman, Madurai district. The owner, S Rameshkannan, had been staying in a rented house in KK Nagar. On November 23, Rameshkannan stayed in his house in Thuvariman and found the front door broken open the next day. The burglars stole 72 sovereigns of gold jewellery and a few silver items. The Nagamalai Pudukottai police have registered a case.
