Robbers strike at locked houses, steal gold, cash
Coimbatore: Unidentified people broke into a house at Peelamedu Pudur and decamped with gold ornaments weighing 37 sovereigns and 12 lakh.
According to the Peelamedu police, the incident occurred when house owner P Rajendran, 58, of Thirumagal Nagar, was away in Bengaluru along with his family members.
A police officer said the family had gone to Bengaluru on August 3.“Rajendran had installed CCTV cameras in front of his house and the live feed was accessible on his mobile phone. When he couldn’t access the CCTV footage around 10pm on Saturday, he called up his neighbour Dhamodaran and asked him to check the front door. Dhamodaran found that the door was intact. Rajendran thought the live feed wasn’t avilable becuase of some technical issues.”
The theft came to light when Rajendran returned home around 10pm on Sunday. “The thieves entered the house through the back door, which was broken open, and took away the gold ornaments and cash from a safe. They also stole the CCTV digital video recorder,” the officer said.
When Rajendran alerted the Peelamedu police, a team led by inspector C S Thamilarasan conducted an inquiry. They collected CCTV footage from the neighbouring houses, while forensic experts lifted a few fingerprints from the crime scene. Police have registered a case and further inquiry is on.
In another incident, robbers broke into a house on Mumanayakkar Street at PN Pudur on Monday evening and made away with gold ornaments weighing eight sovereigns and 1 lakh when house owner P Kumar went for a walk along with his wife.
The incident came to light when Kumar returned to the house after 90 minutes. Based on his complaint, the RS Puram police have registered a case and launched a probe into the incident.
