Prius recall overview:

  • Who: Toyota is recalling 211,000 2023-2024 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles.
  • Why: Water can enter the electronic rear door latches, and the doors can open while the vehicle is in motion if the doors are not locked, the recall says.
  • Where: The Toyota recall is effective across Japan, North America, Europe and Asia.

A new Toyota recall has been issued for 211,000 2023-2024 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles due to a rear door latch issue that can allow doors to open while the vehicle is in motion.

The Prius recall impacts 55,000 vehicles in the United States, with the remainder in Japan, the rest of North America, Europe and Asia.

Water can enter the electronic rear door latches, causing them to malfunction and open while the vehicle is in motion if the doors are not locked, increasing the risk of injury, the Prius recall says.

Toyota advises Prius owners to set their vehicles to automatically lock the doors when their car is shifted from park until the problem can be fixed.

Toyota dealers will replace both right and left rear door opener switches with improved ones, free of charge, as part of the Prius recall.

Toyota will notify owners of Prius recall in early June

Toyota did not say if it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Toyota will contact customers in early June about the recall. The Toyota Brand Engagement Center can be reached at 1-800-331-4331.

Toyota recently announced a safety recall of 381,000 Tacoma vehicles that may have a defect that can cause axle-retaining nuts to loosen and possibly fall off, increasing the risk of a crash.
