Roblox makes it easier for anyone to create and sell avatar items

Roblox announced today that it’s relaxing the requirements behind uploading, publishing, and selling 3D content on Roblox Marketplace.

Previously, the company only allowed a small number of people (via an application process) to sell clothing and other accessories for avatars. But now anyone who has gone through ID verification, is a Roblox Premium member (either at the 1000 or 2200 Robux tiers) and follows the platform’s community standards and Marketplace policies can start selling content.

More details on the policy changes can be found on Roblox’s blog post

“Opening up creation isn’t only a win for creators, but for users too. It’s just the first step in making Marketplace a home for more diverse expression for users,” said vice president of economy Enrico D’Angelo in a statement. “With more creators around the world creating items for avatars, users will find 3D items that represent who they want to be in the virtual world.”

User-generated content – in the form of Roblox games and avatar items – has been key to the platform’s massive success, and over the years some creators have become multi-millionaires and started their own development studios. Roblox currently has 71 million daily active users, and many of them visit the Marketplace every day. In the first nine months of 2023, players bought 1.6 billion digital fashion items and accessories.

During this year’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Roblox also revealed that it’s working on new AI tools to make content creation easier and more accessible for its community.
