BlackBerry Ltd. (TSX:BB) QNX software is now embedded in more than 235 million vehicles worldwide, a year-over-year increase of 20 million.

TechInsights, a technology analysis and market research firm determined these figures for the Waterloo, Ontario-based tech company.

BlackBerry QNX delivers safety-certified embedded software for the vehicles, from digital cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to infotainment systems and domain controllers.

The QNX royalty backlog has increased to approximately $640 million at the end of its fiscal year 2023. This represents a 14 per cent increase over three quarters, from approximately $560 million reported at the end of the first quarter of fiscal year 2023.

Most BlackBerry QNX software products that are integrated and used in automotive electronic control units are licensed on a per-unit royalty basis.

In a news release, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO, John Chen explained that in 10 years, QNX had expanded from being in more than 16 million vehicles to over 235 million today.

“As vehicles become increasingly software-defined, our value proposition becomes even more critical to their development and the smart cities they are central to the advancement of. BlackBerry is pleased to be the long-standing and trusted partner of the automotive industry, and to be key to the emergence of a trusted smart world,” Chen said.

BlackBerry (BB) opened trading at C$6.33 per share and has risen 46.9 per cent since the year began.
