Sep. 5—United Airlines temporarily suspended all flights nationwide from taking off Tuesday morning due to an "equipment outage," according to an alert from the Federal Aviation Administration.

"We are experiencing a systemwide technology issue and are holding all aircraft(s) at their departure airports," representatives of the company wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, shortly after 10:30 a.m.

"Flights that are already airborne are continuing to their destination as planned," the post continued.

Transportation officials lifted the pause at about 10:50 a.m.

Neither the post nor the alert provided detailed information about the technical problem.

Twenty-nine United flights were delayed at San Francisco International Airport during the ground stop, according to FlightAware, a flight-tracking website.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg acknowledged the stoppage, which he attributed to "IT issues" in a social media post. He said the Federal Aviation Administration is gathering information about the cause and scope, and that the Department of Transportation will "make sure UA meets its obligations to affected passengers."
