Japan's Itochu Corp (TYO:8001) and Akaysha Energy Pty Ltd, the BlackRock Inc (NYSE:BLK)-backed Aussie battery energy developer, entered into an agreement to cooperate on their utility-scale energy storage business.

The strategic alliance is looking to develop high-performance and efficient systems as well as the joint development of energy storage plants in Japan and overseas business, including Australia, Itochu said on Friday.

At present, Akaysha is developing the 850-MW/1,680-MWh Waratah Super Battery (WSB) project in New South Wales. The company, which received investments from BlackRock's Global Renewable Power Fund last year, aims to develop more than 10 GWh of energy storage plants. Its partner, Itochu, has more than 600 MWh of batteries installed in Japan and abroad under its residential and industrial energy storage business sector.
