Wells Fargo, Other Firms Hit With $549 Million in Fines for Failing to Preserve Electronic Messages

A group of brokerage firms, including units of Wells Fargo, will pay more than $549 million to settle charges they failed to properly preserve electronic communications, the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission said Thursday. 

The penalties are the latest example of regulators cracking down on lax recordkeeping related to and Wall Street employees’ use of messaging apps, such as WhatsApp and Signal, to do business.
