IBM partners with Hugging Face to advance Natural Language Processing

IBM and Hugging Face, an open-source AI platform, announced today that IBM is participating in Hugging Face’s US$235 million series D fundraising round. The new financing will strengthen Hugging Face’s position as the premier open-source and open-science artificial intelligence platform.

Hugging Face and IBM recently established a partnership on Watsonx, IBM’s generative AI platform, to assist organizations in building, deploying, and customizing foundation models across many domains. Within Watsonx, AI developers may use models pre-trained by IBM and the Hugging Face community to enable a variety of Natural Language Processing (NLP) functions such as question answering, content production and summarization, text categorization, and extraction.

On Hugging Face, IBM has provided over 200 open models and datasets, including the recently released Geospatial Foundation Model in collaboration with NASA. It is Hugging Face’s largest geographic foundation model and the first open-source AI foundation model produced by NASA. In addition, IBM intends to host Meta’s Llama 2-chat 70 billion parameter model within Watsonx, supporting the company’s utilizing both third-party its own AI models to sustain open innovation.
