The 7th edition of the Amazon Prime Day annual sale is here. The festival which has become one of the most anticipated outings for avid shoppers promises to be bigger than ever. The Prime Day sale went live at midnight on July 15. The two-day festival allows Prime members to enjoy thousands of deals across smartphones, TVs, appliances, fashion & beauty essentials, groceries, Amazon devices, home & kitchen appliances, and an array of other everyday essentials.

Amazon has become adept at recognising the needs of Indian consumers, said Akshay Sahi, Director, of Prime and Delivery Experience, Amazon India. “Serving more customers as memberships expand, we cater to consumers from all parts of the socio-economic strata, different regions of India, and diverse choices and preferences. Over the years, we have become adept at recognizing your specific needs and ensuring that the relevant offers are available to you,” Sahi told indianexpress.com

Perhaps, the biggest advantage for consumers would be fast delivery speeds across India. Prime members ordering from 25 cities will be able to get their products delivered the same day or the next day. These 25 cities include Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Faridabad, Gandhi Nagar, Guntur, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Patna, Pune, Thane, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, etc.

In the last few years, Amazon has also overcome its logistical hurdles to facilitate optimal delivery options across regions. “Last year, 65 per cent of the growth came from Tier II and Tier III cities. So, we see consumers from metros and Tier 1 continue to buy more and more, while consumers from Tier II and Tier II keep discovering new categories embracing the prime ecosystem,” Sahi explained while elaborating on the success of Prime Day across regions.

This year the e-commerce giant will be launching over 45,000 products from over 400 top global and Indian brands. Prominent brands that would be launching their products include Samsung, OnePlus, iQoo, RealmeNazro, American Tourister, Hopscotch, Maybelline, Tata, Nestle, Pintola, and Slurrp. Besides over 2000 new products from small and medium businesses will also be making their way to consumers.

The history of Amazon Prime Day

Amazon Prime Day has over the years got deeply embedded in the psyche of consumers worldwide. Reportedly, the first Prime Day took place on July 15, 2015, to celebrate the e-commerce giant’s 20th anniversary. It lasted for 24 hours and was available to Prime members from the US, the UK, Japan, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Austria, and Canada. However, in India, Prime Day was introduced in July 2017. The first Prime Day generated an estimated $900,000 worth of sales. Meanwhile, Prime Day 2022 was reported to have earned revenues to the tune of over $12 billion.

Prime Day is an event created by Amazon on the lines of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc. Traditionally, the day has been observed during mid-July every year. The strategy behind choosing the dates has been that summers have been seen as a period marked by a slump for retailers. Prime Day is seen as offering a kickstart to Amazon during a time that is usually seen as dormant for sales. Another reason to have it during the weekdays is that weekends in the US are mostly the time for travel and leisure.

The purpose of Amazon Prime Day

The primary objective here is to attract new Prime subscribers and drive sales to the brand’s marketplace. It is also seen as onboarding new customers to the Amazon ecosystem of consumption that comprises Prime Video, Amazon Music, Amazon Fresh, Audible, Kindle Unlimited, etc. Sales during Prime Day allow retailers to acquire repeat customers who look forward to taking advantage of the offerings in the loyalty program throughout the year.

From big brands to small and medium ones, all offer some of the lowest prices on apparel, tech, beauty products, home essentials, and more. It has also been seen that brands owned by Amazon also tend to offer more discounts on tablets, Kindle, Fire TVs, etc. Besides, another major reason cited is that Prime Day allows the e-commerce giant to test their sale and discount programs ahead of the big holiday seasons. The day has been known to create an artificial hike in orders, something that has been seen during the big holiday seasons.
